Drawing manga characters?
I am a real fan of manga, and I’ve been drawing it for a long time now. But I have 1 problem. I draw really good in certain positions, but I lack confidence when drawing. I lack the freedom to draw whatever I want. I’m talking mostly about human poses and proportions. I feel as if i can draw only certain positions witch i learned from only certain camera angles, and if i try and put a semi-bird 3/4 view that I would screw up. I lack the freedom to just go and draw something good from the first time. But I can’t, I erase 3-4 times, and draw a sketch first to see where everything is gonna be, and my characters sometimes look just off (wrong proportions). How can I correct this and gain confidence in my hand? I’ve been practicing a lot but there’s always something missing to my drawing. It lacks stability. Please help I am really ambiguous to draw a manga.
I am also a manga/anime geek…and sometimes I have trouble with poses and proportions, but you have to remember that all manga characters don’t look the same, and sometimes you can get away with deforming your characters. If you draw a pose and it doesn’t look good enough to you…before you erase anything, try to visualize how you would want it to look, or take a break from drawing. (sometimes you just need a break to get your artist mojo going again XD )
As far as confidence goes, you need to force yourself out of your comfort zone and try doing things you haven’t done before…even if it doesn’t turn out so good the first time…if you practice enough you should get it right eventually. Also…watching the anime versions and seeing the movement in real time might help.
Most importantly, you must develop your own style…which will determine how your characters will look(eg. Naruto-kinda short with large hands and feet, not very detailed hair, Bleach-very tall and skinny (mostly) with small hands and feet-sometimes with small heads and large bodies(like kenpachi zaraki)
